A Cotton Mission Called Dixie
St. George was settled in 1861 as a cotton mission under Latter Day Saint apostle Erastus Snow, which earned the area its nickname, Dixie. At the October 6, 1861 church conference in Salt Lake City, about 300 families were called to the mission. The city sits just south of the Pine Valley Mountains, which mark the southern edge of the Great Basin, and is home to Utah Tech University.

Why a Utah License Counts in Washington County
State-licensed review
A Utah licensee, not an out-of-state reviewer, evaluates your St. George request.
Honesty is required
Utah makes it a misdemeanor to mislead a health care provider to get support animal paperwork.
Federal rules apply
Utah's definition borrows the federal accommodation standard, so your need is what the letter documents.
St. George Answers for Dog Owners and Renters
- When do St. George dog tags expire?
- Every December 31. New tags go on sale January 1, and renewals are due by February 28.
- How many dogs can I keep at a St. George home?
- Two. City rules permit only two dogs per residence.
- What is the late fee for renewing a St. George dog license?
- $5 per month for each dog after February 28, up to a maximum of $20 per dog.
- Do visitors need a St. George dog license?
- No, as long as the dog is a temporary resident wearing a current tag from another city or county.
- Can a St. George landlord collect a pet deposit for a support animal?
- Utah Code 26B-6-803 says private housing owners may not charge an extra fee or deposit because of a service or support animal, and the tenant still answers for any damage the animal does. Utah's support animal definition rests on federal accommodation law, which HUD stopped enforcing for untrained ESAs in May 2026.
- Where is the St. George animal shelter?
- At 605 East Waterworks Road. Visits are by appointment only, Monday through Saturday, and the phone number is 435-627-4350.
