The Cotton Mission That Named Utah's Dixie
Washington was established in 1857, when the church sent 28 families, led by former Mississippi cotton planter Robert Dockery Covington, to see whether cotton would grow this far south. Dixie, a nickname for the southeastern states, stuck to the whole St. George area, and the crop was milled here in the stone cotton factory of 1867. The city is named for George Washington and encourages the name Washington City.
