Fort Cedar and the Iron Mission
Pioneers from Parowan were sent here in late 1851 to build an iron works, halfway between iron deposits to the west and coal up Cedar Canyon to the east. The town was named for its abundant trees, which are actually junipers, and two companies led by Henry Lunt reached the fort site in a blizzard on November 11, 1851, the city's official founding date.
