Named on Hurricane Hill
Settlers arrived in 1896, and the town took its name after a whirlwind tore the top off the buggy carrying Erastus Snow, and it was part of the Cotton Mission. The Hurricane Canal was finished in 1904, and the town became known for small farms of peaches, pecans and pistachios. The canal has been empty since 1985, and a trail now runs beside it.

Hurricane Questions Stacked Like Trail Cairns
How much does it cost to adopt from the Hurricane Animal Shelter?
$60 for a dog, which includes a microchip, and $50 for a cat. Adoptions are by appointment only.
Are pets adopted from the Hurricane shelter spayed or neutered?
Yes. Every adopted animal is spayed or neutered before placement, and young animals are fixed by the date set in the adoption contract. Hurricane's two veterinary clinics also give a free health exam at adoption, discounted vaccinations and low-cost spay and neuter.
How many dogs can I license at one Hurricane address?
Up to four dogs per residential address in a calendar year. A dog needs a license by four months of age, and a newly acquired dog within 30 days.
What does a Hurricane dog license cost?
$10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for one that is not. For 2026, licenses were due January 1, and fees went up by $20 per residence from March 1.
Can I surrender a pet to the Hurricane shelter?
Only by arrangement. Fill out the relinquishment form and call 435-635-8314 first; walk-ins are not accepted, and a waitlist applies when the kennels are full.
Where do I renew a Hurricane dog license?
At the Police Department, 90 S 700 W, with cash or check, online, or from December to February at Desert Vet and Zion Vet. Bring a current rabies certificate, because a photo of the tag is not accepted.
