From Timpanogas to the Y

The area was first called Timpanogas, a Ute word that may mean rock river, and the Spanish missionary-explorer Silvestre Vélez de Escalante is considered the first European to visit, in 1776. Brigham Young University and the LDS Church's largest Missionary Training Center are in Provo today. Halfway up Y Mountain, a hillside letter Y of whitewashed concrete, built in the early 20th century, honors BYU.

Provo Questions, Answered

Who licenses dogs and cats for Provo residents?
South Utah Valley Animal Shelter. Provo requires the license, but it is issued through the shelter rather than by the city.
Can I buy a two- or three-year pet license in Provo?
Yes. The Utah County license comes in 1-, 2- and 3-year terms: $15, $25 and $35 for an altered pet, or $35, $65 and $95 for an unaltered one.
Do I have to keep my dog on a leash in Provo parks?
Yes. Dogs must be leashed in public places, city parks included, unless they are inside a designated off-leash park.
Does Provo license backyard chickens?
Yes. Provo City licenses chickens itself: hens only, kept in a rear-yard coop, with a $20 fee and an annual registration.
Does Utah law stop a Provo landlord from charging a support animal deposit?
Utah Code 26B-6-803 says the owner of private housing may not charge an extra fee or deposit because of a support animal, though damage the animal causes can still be billed. The statute leans on federal accommodation rules, and HUD's May 2026 move away from untrained-ESA cases has made the federal side less settled.
Who do I call about an animal problem in Provo?
Provo Animal Control at (801) 852-6210 for non-emergencies. Its office is at 445 West Center Street, Suite 130.
