A Dugout in the West Bluffs

Alexander Beckstead, a blacksmith from Ontario, became South Jordan's first settler in 1859, living with his family in a dugout cut into the west bluffs above the Jordan River. The Beckstead Ditch he helped build still irrigates city parks and Mulligan's golf course. Sugar beets arrived around 1910, sold for cash at the Utah-Idaho Sugar factory in West Jordan, and residents voted to incorporate on November 8, 1935.

Down the River: South Jordan Questions

How many pets can a South Jordan household have?

Two dogs and two cats. City rules allow residents only two of each.

Do cats need a paid license in South Jordan?

No. Cats are exempt from the city's licensing fees.

What does a South Jordan dog license cost?

Since July 1, 2024, it is $10 a year for an altered dog and $35 a year for an unaltered dog. Seniors 65 and older pay $5 a year for an altered dog.

What do I need to license my dog in South Jordan?

Current rabies records and the rabies tag number. Seniors claiming the reduced fee present ID in person.

Can a South Jordan landlord charge a deposit for my support animal?

Utah Code 26B-6-803 keeps private housing owners from charging an extra fee or deposit because a tenant has a service or support animal, while still letting them recover reasonable repair costs. Utah counts an animal as a support animal only if federal accommodation law does, and HUD has not enforced untrained-ESA housing claims since May 2026.

When is South Jordan Animal Control available?

Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. The shelter is at 10882 South Park Road, (801) 254-3742.
