Thirsty Soil and Silver Mining

A popular story says Brigham Young named Sandy for its thirsty soil, though no historical evidence backs it. Farmers took up land along State Street, and when silver mining began in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Sandy became a supply station for the miners. The original plat was about one square mile on an alluvial terrace along the eastern edge of the Jordan River drainage, and the city incorporated in 1893.

Why Sandy Renters Look for a Utah License

Licensed where you live

The clinician reviewing your Sandy case holds a Utah professional license.

The truth matters

Under 26B-6-805, knowingly misleading a provider to get documentation is a class C misdemeanor.

Federal standard in play

Utah relies on federal accommodation law to decide what counts as a support animal.

Sandy Questions in One Table

QuestionAnswer
How often do I renew a pet license in Sandy?Every twelve months, or every thirty-six months if the dog or cat is licensed in the same calendar month as a three-year rabies vaccination.
When must a new puppy or kitten be licensed in Sandy?Within thirty days after the pet reaches four months of age.
I adopted an adult dog. How soon do I need a Sandy license?Within ten days of acquiring a dog or cat that is already over four months old.
Is the Sandy animal shelter a no-kill shelter?Yes. The city's no-kill shelter is at 8715 South 700 West, and its phone number is (801) 352-4450.
Can my Sandy landlord treat my support animal like a pet and add a deposit?Utah Code 26B-6-803 forbids a private housing owner from charging an extra fee or deposit on account of a service or support animal, though the owner may recover a reasonable cost to fix damage. Utah ties the support animal label to federal accommodation law, and federal enforcement for untrained ESAs weakened when HUD stopped pursuing those cases in May 2026.
Who can hold a pet license in Sandy?A person 18 or older, who applies with a current rabies vaccination certificate for the animal.
