Named for a Salt Town in New York

Early settlers named Syracuse after Syracuse, New York, a city famed for its salt production in the 19th century. Settlers lived in the area from the mid-1800s, but the town board was not formed until 1935, and Syracuse became a third-class city in 1950.

Syracuse Questions in a Ranger's Field Guide

Page 1Field note

Who licenses dogs in Syracuse?

Animal Care of Davis County. Syracuse uses the county animal ordinance, and every dog over four months old needs a county license and proof of a current rabies vaccination.

Page 2Field note

How many pets can a Syracuse household have?

Three, under the Davis County limit that has applied in every city in the county since 2023. A special permit can license a fourth pet.

Page 3Field note

Can I take my dog to Antelope Island?

Yes. Pets are allowed at Antelope Island State Park, but the park rule requires domesticated animals, pets and service animals to be on a leash or tether or otherwise under the person's physical control.

Page 4Field note

Are service animals exempt from the Antelope Island leash rule?

No. Utah Admin. Code R651-633-5 covers service animals too. The only exception is a dog actively engaged in waterfowl hunting, which may be under voice control.

Page 5Field note

When is Antelope Island State Park open?

Year-round from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The visitor center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the park phone number is 801-725-9263.

Page 6Field note

Does Utah law still protect support animals in housing after the HUD change?

Yes. Utah Code 26B-6-803 still bars private housing owners from discriminating over a support animal or charging an extra fee or deposit for one. What changed in May 2026 was federal enforcement, when HUD stopped pursuing untrained-ESA housing claims; the Fair Housing Act itself and private lawsuits remain.
