Daytona Beach Assistance Animals: Beach Zones, Race Weeks and Licenses
You can drive on this beach, but most of it is closed to dogs. Daytona Beach, a city of more than 70,000 in a county of over half a million, runs on a patchwork of beach zones where a trained service dog, an emotional support animal and a family pet each get a different answer.
Volusia's Beach Zones, North to South
The county sets beach rules along about 47 miles of coast. For pets and support animals, only a few segments are open, and even those carry conditions.
All four dog zones are open to pets during daylight hours only. Zones and hours are set by Volusia County and can change. Check the county's beach pages or the signs at each ramp before you go.

Are dogs allowed on Daytona Beach?
Only in designated areas. Volusia County keeps pets off its beaches except for marked dog-friendly zones, including a stretch of about 1.7 miles in Daytona Beach between Seabreeze Boulevard and Williams Avenue that opened in December 2025, open to dogs in daylight hours.
Can my emotional support dog go anywhere on the beach?
No. An ESA letter is a housing document. On the beach an emotional support dog is treated like any pet, so it may go only where pets are allowed and under the same leash and cleanup rules.
Is my trained service dog allowed on Volusia County beaches?
Yes. A service animal as defined by the ADA may accompany its handler on the public beach. Keep it under control, stay out of posted wildlife areas and clean up after it.
What are the dog rules at Lighthouse Point Park and Smyrna Dunes Park?
Leashed pets may use the inlet shoreline at both parks but never the Atlantic side, and they are kept off the elevated boardwalks after 10 a.m. Leashes can be no longer than six feet.
Do I need a city pet license in Volusia County?
It depends on the city. South Daytona licenses dogs and cats six months and older and renews in October, while Port Orange and Ormond Beach issue their own city tags. Ask your city hall or police department.
Can I leave my dog in the car while I am on the beach?
You should not. A closed car heats dangerously within minutes in Florida sun, and state law shields a bystander from paying for the damage if they break in to rescue an animal in imminent danger, provided they call 911 and meet the other conditions.
