- What is the difference between a PSD and an ESA?
- Training. A psychiatric service dog is individually trained to perform tasks for a person's psychiatric disability, which gives it public access rights. An emotional support animal helps through its presence, needs no training and has rights mainly in housing.
- Is a psychiatric service dog a service animal in Florida?
- Yes, when it is individually trained to do work or perform tasks related to a psychiatric disability. Florida Statute 413.08 covers dogs and miniature horses, and says emotional support alone is not work or a task.
- Do I need a PSD letter for housing?
- No letter is needed to enter public places with a service dog. In housing, if your disability or the dog's role is not obvious, a landlord may ask for reliable information, and a clinician's letter is the usual way to provide it.
- Can a therapy dog live in no-pet housing?
- Not because it is a therapy dog. Therapy dogs visit hospitals, schools and care homes by invitation and have no special housing or public access rights. If the owner has a disability, the dog could be the subject of a separate accommodation request.
- Can an ESA fly in the cabin?
- Not as an ESA. Since the 2021 federal rule change, airlines treat emotional support animals as pets. A trained psychiatric service dog can fly in the cabin with the airline's Department of Transportation forms.
- Does a psychiatric service dog need certification?
- No. Florida and federal law require no certification or registration, and a dog can be trained by a professional or by its handler. What counts is that the dog is trained for your disability and behaves well in public.
