Hawks' Sawmill Colony
After the Civil War, John Milton Hawks brought freed African Americans to work at his sawmill here, and Esther Hawks set up an integrated school. The colony struggled and most of its members left, but the neighborhood of Freemanville is the legacy of the settlers who stayed. The city is also home to the Dunlawton Plantation and Sugar Mill ruins, within the Sugar Mill Botanical Gardens.
By rail: Port Orange once had a separate passenger station and freight station on Dunlawton Avenue; the two were merged in 1924.

Port Orange Questions in the Mill Ledger
Does my Port Orange cat need a city tag?
Yes. All domestic dogs, cats and ferrets living in Port Orange must be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian and have a current Port Orange license tag.
What does a Port Orange animal tag cost?
The city lists $10 a year for a sterilized animal and $15 a year for an unsterilized one. A replacement tag is $15.
When do Port Orange tags expire, and is there a late fee?
Tags expire on December 31 and are renewed every year. The city lists a $20 penalty for not getting a license within 60 days after it expires or after the animal first becomes subject to licensing.
Do Port Orange pets have to be spayed or neutered?
Yes. The city makes sterilization mandatory for dogs and cats owned by residents, with exceptions set out in its spay and neuter ordinance; an unsterilized animal needs an unaltered tag application.
How many pets can a Port Orange home keep?
Generally up to four dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs or ferrets per dwelling unit. Geckos, iguanas and birds of the parrot family are also limited to four per unit.
Can a Port Orange landlord ask for my pet's tag and rabies records?
Yes. Florida Statute 760.27 allows a housing provider to request proof that an assistance animal complies with state and local licensing and vaccination rules, but not your diagnosis or medical records.
