Kanesville and Wilson Become One City
The four Wilson brothers began farming west of the Weber River in 1854, and Wilson grew around them. Settlers reached Northwest Hooper in 1868, and in 1882 it took the name Kanesville, after Thomas L. Kane, when a church ward was organized there. The two communities joined as the City of West Haven on July 1, 1991, and the Kanesville name lives on at Kanesville School.

West Haven Questions at the River Gauge
Who licenses dogs in West Haven?
Weber County Animal Services. The county lists North Ogden, Ogden, Roy, Washington Terrace, South Ogden, Riverdale and Pleasant View as doing their own licensing; West Haven is not on that list, so its residents license with the county.
Can I renew a Weber County dog license online?
Yes. Renewals can be paid online with Visa, Discover or Mastercard, and card fees may apply. A new license has to be bought in person or by mail.
What do I bring to license a dog at the Weber County shelter?
Proof of rabies vaccination and of spay or neuter surgery. County ordinance requires rabies vaccination for dogs and cats over four months old, and the shelter offers $15 rabies shots and $25 microchipping.
When is the Weber County Animal Shelter open?
Monday through Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. for adoptions only. It is closed on Sundays and holidays, and the adoption process stops 15 minutes before closing.
What if the pet I adopt is not spayed or neutered yet?
You sign a spay and neuter agreement that gives you 30 days to have it done, and part of the adoption fee comes back as a voucher for any veterinarian. Adopters must be at least 18.
Will Weber County remove raccoons or feral cats from my West Haven yard?
No. For wild animals, call a licensed wildlife trapper or the Division of Wildlife Resources at 801-476-2740. Feral cats are protected and are not removed, though the county runs a community cat program.
