Box Elder, the Co-op and a New Name
William Davis explored the area in 1850 and returned with families the next year. Lorenzo Snow brought more settlers in 1853 and named the town Box Elder in 1855. A mercantile co-op store opened in 1864 and grew into the most successful of the church's cooperative ventures. When the town incorporated on January 12, 1867, it took the name Brigham City, and Brigham Young gave his last public sermon there in 1877.
