What if I live in Knox County outside the city?
The City tag rule covers pets inside Knoxville's limits. Tennessee law still requires a rabies shot for dogs and cats six months or older, and Young-Williams Animal Services handles animal control for both the city and the county.
Can a landlord ask how my animal helps me?
Yes. When your disability is known but the need for the animal is not, Tennessee lets the landlord ask for reliable documentation of that disability-related need.
Does the state law apply to off-campus leases near UT?
A lease with a private landlord near campus falls under the same Tennessee statute on support animal requests as any other rental. University housing runs its own accommodation process.
Is it a crime to pass off a pet as a service dog in a store?
Yes. Falsely telling a business employee that an animal is a service animal is a Class B misdemeanor in Tennessee, and misrepresenting a service animal also carries 100 hours of community service.
