Craig's Station, a Governor's Wife and a College
In 1785 John Craig built a palisade on Nine Mile Creek, and on April 11, 1793, 280 settlers sheltered at his station. Craig gave land beside the fort for a new town, incorporated on July 11, 1795 and named for Mary Grainger Blount, wife of territorial governor William Blount. Sam Houston's family moved here in 1808. Maryville College, founded in 1819 by Presbyterian minister Isaac L. Anderson, is among the fifty oldest colleges in the country.

Maryville Questions on the Chalkboard
Do I need a license for my dog or cat in Maryville?
Yes. Maryville Municipal Code 91-16 requires every dog and cat in the city to be licensed.
Do I have to bring my pet in to get a Maryville license?
No. You only need the rabies certificate, plus a sterility certificate if one applies to your pet.
What happens if my licensed dog gets lost?
A current license tag on a lost dog guarantees a phone call to the owner from Animal Control, so keep your address and phone number up to date with the office.
What should I do about a loose dog in my Maryville neighborhood?
If you can, follow the dog home, then notify Animal Control in writing or by phone and leave a number. Letting a dog or cat run at large violates city code section 10-203.
When can I visit the Maryville Animal Shelter?
To identify, reclaim or adopt an animal, go 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter is closed on Sunday.
Can a Maryville landlord require a pet deposit for my emotional support animal?
Not automatically. Tennessee law lets you request an exception to any animal payment as a disability accommodation, and the landlord may first ask for reliable documentation if your disability is not obvious.
