- Do Nashville dogs and cats have to be registered?
- Yes. Metro requires dogs and cats six months or older to have a current rabies vaccination and to be registered with Davidson County. The rabies tag costs $8 for one year or $24 for three years, depending on the vaccine your vet gave.
- What can a Nashville landlord ask me to provide?
- Under T.C.A. 66-7-111, when your disability is not obvious, a landlord may ask for reliable documentation of the disability and of your need for the animal. The landlord may verify it but may not demand confidential medical records.
- Does an online registration or certificate count?
- No. Tennessee excludes paperwork from a website whose main purpose is selling certificates, registrations or similar documents for a fee. The documentation has to come from someone with actual knowledge of your disability.
- Can I ask to skip a pet fee or a pet limit?
- Yes. The statute lets a tenant with a disability request an exception to a policy that bans or limits animals, or that requires a payment to keep one. The landlord then reviews the request and your documentation.
- What happens to someone who fakes a support animal?
- Knowingly faking a disability-related need or giving false documentation is a Class B misdemeanor under T.C.A. 39-16-304. It also counts as a default under the lease, so the landlord may end the tenancy and seek damages.
- Who handles civil rights complaints in Tennessee now?
- The Tennessee Human Rights Commission was dissolved on June 30, 2025. Since July 1, 2025, the Tennessee Human Rights Act has been enforced by the Civil Rights Enforcement Division of the Attorney General's office.
