Our Water Place on Peteetneet Creek

Sixteen settlers led by James Edward Pace Jr. reached Peteetneet Creek on October 20, 1850. The creek's name comes from Pah-ti't-ni't, "our water place" in the Timpanogos dialect, and Chief Peteetneet's clan lived about a mile northwest of today's center. On March 23, 1851 Brigham Young named the town Payson, after the Illinois town that had sheltered his family, and it became a city on January 21, 1853.

Payson Questions in the Parade Program

Entry No. 1

How many dogs and cats can I keep in Payson?

Payson City Code 7.04.240 allows no more than two dogs and two cats four months or older, unless you qualify for and buy a kennel license.

Entry No. 2

What counts as a barking dog in Payson?

A dog that barks continuously for ten minutes, or on and off for half an hour or more, to the disturbance of any person at any time of day or night. Barking at a trespasser, or after being teased or provoked, does not count.

Entry No. 3

Can I keep chickens in Payson?

Yes, up to six hens and no roosters in a residential zone, on a parcel of at least 5,000 square feet with a single family home, duplex or twin home. The coop goes in the rear yard at least 35 feet from neighboring homes, and Development Services issues a zoning compliance certificate.

Entry No. 4

Where do Payson residents license a dog?

Payson is in the South Utah Valley Animal Services district, and its Utah County license is valid anywhere in the county. License online, at most vets or at a city office within 30 days of getting the dog or moving in, with a current rabies certificate.

Entry No. 5

Where is the shelter that serves Payson?

South Utah Valley Animal Shelter at 582 W 3000 N in Spanish Fork, (801) 851-4080. It opens Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Entry No. 6

Do the pet limits apply to a psychiatric service dog in Payson?

Section 7.04.240 itself lists no exception for service animals, so ask Payson City about your household. In housing, Utah Code 26B-6-803 separately protects tenants with a service animal from being charged an extra fee or deposit.
