North Cottonwood Becomes the County Seat
The Haight family settled here in 1847 with a farm and an inn, and five more families came in the autumn of 1849 to what was called North Cottonwood. In 1852 the territorial legislature made it the Davis County seat and named it Farmington, and a year later settlers raised a wall around the townsite, known as the Fort. The church's Primary Association for children was organized here on August 11, 1878.

What Utah Law Adds to a Farmington Letter
A Utah signature
Farmington letters come from clinicians licensed to practice in Utah.
No shortcuts
Utah Code 26B-6-805 makes misleading a provider for support animal papers a class C misdemeanor.
Housing focus
An ESA letter supports a housing request; wildlife areas and parks set their own animal rules.
Farmington Questions From the Birding Log
When are dogs banned at Farmington Bay?
From March 10 through August 31 each year, or as posted by the Division of Wildlife Resources. Utah rule R657-9-30 lists Farmington Bay among the wildlife areas closed to dogs during that period.
Can I bring my dog to Farmington Bay in the fall?
Generally, yes. Dogs are allowed on most state wildlife and waterfowl management areas outside the closure, but a dog may never be used to harass, pursue or take protected wildlife.
Who licenses dogs in Farmington?
Animal Care of Davis County. County code requires a license for a dog older than four months that has lived in Davis County for more than 30 days, and the county's dispatch team answers at 801-444-2200, option 6.
Where do Farmington residents reclaim a lost pet?
At Animal Care of Davis County, 1422 East 600 North in Fruit Heights. Bring identification and proof that the pet is yours; the impound fee is $45, and each night of boarding adds $15.
When does the S&S Shortline Railroad Park give rides?
On the first Saturday of each month from June through September. The park, in the Farmington area, holds more than 90 pieces of railroad equipment.
Must a Farmington landlord waive pet fees for an ESA?
Utah Code 26B-6-803 bars extra fees or deposits for a support animal that qualifies as a reasonable accommodation under federal law. Since HUD's May 2026 change, an untrained ESA no longer qualifies automatically, so the answer depends on the facts of the request.
