From Salt Lick to the Model City
Settlers called the spot Salt Lick in 1787, after an ancient mineral lick near where the North and South Forks of the Holston meet. The Long Island of the Holston, sacred to the Cherokee and named in the 1770 Treaty of Lochaber, lies mostly inside today's city.
