Sarasota Assistance Animals: Seasonal Stays, Leases and Tags
The city had about 55,000 residents at the 2020 census, inside a county of more than 430,000, and both swell every winter. That seasonal rhythm matters for anyone with an animal, because a week on Siesta Key and a winter lease downtown are not governed by the same rules.
Sarasota at a glance
A County That Doubles in Winter
From January to April the population, the traffic and the rental market all shift. People arrive with animals on arrangements that range from a few nights to half a year, and each kind of stay leans on a different part of the law.
A few nights or weeks
A vacation rental booked like a hotel room. The owner's pet policy usually decides whether a support animal comes, and a trained service animal is handled as in any lodging.
A winter lease
Three or four months in one unit, living there as your home. This is where Florida's emotional support animal statute is most likely to apply.
A year-round home
An annual lease or an owned condo. The full accommodation process applies, including any association with its own animal rules.
Housing or Lodging?

Sarasota County's Tag Rule
Licensing here runs countywide through the Sheriff's Office, and it catches seasonal residents who assume their home county's tag will do.
Florida's rabies statute already requires every dog, cat and ferret four months or older to be vaccinated. A housing provider may ask for proof of licensing and vaccination under Section 760.27, so keep the certificate with your letter.
Renting Downtown and on the Bayfront
Much of central Sarasota's rental stock sits in condominium towers, which means a board as well as a landlord.
- Ask the owner which association rules bind the unit before you sign, not after the animal arrives.
- Send one written request to the owner and ask them to route it to the manager, so there is a single dated record.
- Weight caps and one-pet limits are common in towers. They are exactly what an accommodation request asks the board to set aside.
- Our Florida condo and HOA guide covers the fine and hearing rules that protect you.
Keys, Beaches and Posted Rules
Siesta Key and Lido draw most of the visitors, and beach and park rules are set by the county and the cities, not by the rental.
- Read the posted animal rules at each beach access and park before you bring any animal.
- A trained service animal may accompany its handler where the public is allowed to go.
- A support animal follows the pet rules, whatever a letter says. Housing law does not extend to the sand.
- Summer sand and pavement get hot fast. Walk early, carry water and keep paws off the hottest surfaces.
A Letter Florida Will Accept
Seasonal residents often bring documentation from a clinician back home. Florida is specific about whose information counts.
Accepted without question
A practitioner licensed by the Florida Department of Health, or an out-of-state provider registered with the Florida board to offer telehealth to Florida patients.
Both can be checked on the state's license verification search in a minute.
Accepted only with a condition
A clinician licensed only in your home state counts when they have given you in-person care or services at least once.
A provider you have only ever met online, from out of state, is not on Florida's list, and a Sarasota landlord may lawfully turn that letter away.
Museums, Theaters and Restaurants
Sarasota's cultural calendar peaks in season. Public places follow Florida Statute 413.08, which is about trained animals.
- Staff may ask whether the animal is needed because of a disability and what task it has been trained to do.
- They may not ask for papers or a demonstration, or about your condition.
- A support animal has no right of entry, however well behaved. Some venues allow animals anyway; that is their call.
- Faking a service animal is a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida, with 30 hours of community service.
