A City Built by General Development
The Mackle brothers started the General Development Corporation in 1954 to sell Florida lots to northerners. North Port began as the Sarasota County end of their Port Charlotte project and was incorporated by a special act of the Legislature as North Port Charlotte, with 21 residents, most of them company employees. Long before that, people lived around Little Salt Spring, where archaeologists found a carved oak mortar and part of a wooden boomerang.
