Florida ESA Letter Cost: What You Pay and What You Get

The price of an emotional support animal letter is easy to compare. What it buys is not. In Florida the real value depends on whether the letter meets the state's rules for who may write it, because a letter a landlord can lawfully reject costs you twice.

Three Ways Floridians Pay for a Letter

The cost depends on the route, and each route has a different catch.

Your own therapist

If you are already in treatment, your clinician may write a letter as part of your care. The cost is often a session fee or copay.

Cheapest if you are already a patient

An online evaluation

A telehealth service connects you with a licensed clinician for an evaluation. Prices are commonly in the low hundreds of dollars.

Check the clinician is Florida-licensed

A new in-person provider

An intake appointment with a psychiatrist or psychologist you have not seen before. Costs vary widely with insurance.

Often the slowest route

What the Price Should Include

Use this list to compare any provider, including us. A letter missing one of these may not survive a Florida landlord's review.

A real evaluation

A licensed clinician reviews your history and decides; a form that approves everyone is not an evaluation.

A verifiable license

Name, license type, number and state on the letter, so a landlord can check it on the state search.

Florida eligibility

A Florida license, Florida telehealth registration, or in-person care by an out-of-state provider.

Privacy

No diagnosis on the letter. Florida does not let a housing provider demand one.

Why the Cheapest Letter Can Cost More

A low price usually means something was left out. In Florida, the missing piece is often the one that matters.

No Florida link. An out-of-state clinician you only met online is not on the state's list, so the letter can be refused.
Registry bundles. Certificates, vests and ID cards add cost but not weight; an internet registration is not sufficient by itself.
Instant approval. Florida makes knowingly providing fraudulent ESA documentation a misdemeanor, and a letter with no real evaluation behind it invites that question.
Paying twice. A refusal means a second evaluation, and weeks of delay on a lease or a move.

Insurance, HSA and Therapist Options

Most online letter services are self-pay. There are ways to lower the cost if you already have coverage or a provider.

In-network care. If a covered therapist already treats you, ask whether they will write a housing letter.
HSA and FSA. Ask your plan administrator whether an evaluation counts as a qualified medical expense; rules vary.
Community clinics. Sliding-scale mental health centers can be an option for ongoing care, though waits can be long.

Costs That Come After the Letter

The letter is one line in the budget. These keep coming for as long as the animal lives with you.

Rabies shotsRequired for dogs, cats and ferrets from four months, and a landlord may ask for proof.
County or city licenseFees vary by county and by whether the animal is spayed or neutered.
DamageApproval does not waive your liability for damage beyond normal wear.
Updated lettersA new lease or a new landlord may ask for current information.

What It Costs to Register a Service Animal

  • There is no official service animal or ESA registry in Florida or anywhere in the United States.
  • Florida's service animal law does not require documentation for public access, only training.
  • Paid registrations and ID cards are optional products, not legal requirements.

Cost Questions From Florida Renters

How much does an ESA letter cost in Florida?

Prices vary by provider. Online housing letters are commonly priced in the low hundreds of dollars, and our current price appears in the plan cards on this page. A therapist you already see may write one for the cost of a session.

Is a cheap ESA letter legit?

Price is not the test. What matters in Florida is who wrote it: a Florida-licensed practitioner, a registered telehealth provider, or an out-of-state provider who has seen you in person. A cheap letter that fails that test is money spent twice.

Does health insurance cover an ESA letter?

The letter itself is rarely covered. If an in-network therapist treats you, the session may be covered and they may write the letter as part of your care. Ask your plan whether an evaluation counts as a covered or HSA-eligible expense.

How much does it cost to register a service animal?

Nothing, because there is no official registry. Florida and federal law do not require service animal registration, and a paid registration or ID card is not proof of anything on its own.

Is an ESA letter a one-time cost?

Often not. Florida's statute sets no expiry date, but a landlord may ask for reliable information that is current, so many people budget for a new evaluation when they move or renew a lease.

Can a landlord charge me for my ESA once it is approved?

No pet deposit, pet fee or pet rent may be charged for an approved assistance animal in Florida housing. You remain responsible for any damage the animal causes.
