The City of the Future, Seventy Years On
Plantation takes its name from the Everglades Plantation Company, whose rice farm on the drained wetlands never succeeded. Frederick C. Peters bought the land instead and planned a spacious suburb, which the Miami Herald called "The City of the Future" in 1954.

A Tree City With Room to Walk
Plantation was first named a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation in 1980, and the shade shows. A few habits keep walks easy for you and your animal.
- Plantation Central ParkThe 77-acre park opened in 1983. Keep your dog leashed and follow the posted pet rules.
- Plantation Preserve trailWading birds such as limpkins feed along the water, so keep dogs close.

Golf Communities, HOAs and Plantation Acres
Much of Plantation is governed by an association, from golf-course neighborhoods to condo buildings. Plantation Acres, annexed in 1973, is a special rural district with larger lots.
An association that bans or limits pets still has to consider a reasonable accommodation request. Send the letter to the board or manager in writing, and read our Florida condo and HOA guide before the meeting.

Dogs and cats four months and older need Broward County registration and a tag, issued with a current rabies certificate and renewed each year. Keep a copy with your letter.
