A psychiatric service dog is not a more official kind of emotional support animal. It is a different thing altogether — defined by what the dog has been trained to do, not by any document you hold.

What Counts as a Task
A task is a trained, repeatable action that mitigates the disability. Calming someone by being there is not a task — which is the line between a PSD and an ESA.
Interrupting episodes
Trained nudging or pawing to break dissociation, self-harm behaviour or repetitive compulsions.
Deep pressure therapy
Trained lying across the handler on cue to reduce acute physiological arousal.
Medication prompting
Alerting the handler at set times or retrieving a medication pouch.
Room checks
Entering and clearing a space on cue for handlers with hypervigilance related to trauma.
Guided exit
Leading the handler out of a crowded or overwhelming setting to a pre-trained location.

What a Business May Ask You
When it is not obvious what a service dog does, staff in Colorado public accommodations are limited to two questions.
Permitted
- Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
Not permitted
- Asking what your disability is
- Demanding documentation or an ID card
- Requiring the dog to demonstrate a task
- Requiring a vest or special tag
- Charging a pet fee for the service dog
A business may still ask a handler to remove a dog that is out of control and not effectively managed, or that is not housebroken. Colorado also penalises misrepresenting a dog as a service animal, so claiming task training that does not exist carries real risk.

There is no shortcut and no certificate that replaces training. This is the realistic path.
Clinical assessment
A licensed clinician evaluates whether a psychiatric disability exists and whether a task-trained dog could mitigate it.
Temperament match
Not every dog suits public work. Stability, confidence and low reactivity matter more than breed.
Task training
Months of structured training on specific tasks, by the handler, a trainer, or both. The ADA does not require a professional programme.
Public access proofing
Reliable behaviour in busy, distracting environments before the dog works in public.

Does Colorado require service dog registration or certification?
No. Neither Colorado nor the federal government runs a service dog registry. Status comes from task training. Websites selling service dog certificates are selling something that has no legal function.
What does a PSD letter for housing actually do?
It supports a housing accommodation request by documenting a disability-related need. It does not grant public access — that depends entirely on the dog's training, and no letter can substitute for it.
Can I train my own psychiatric service dog?
Yes. Owner training is permitted under the ADA. What matters is that the dog reliably performs disability-related tasks and behaves appropriately in public.
Is a psychiatric service dog appropriate for schizophrenia?
For some people, trained tasks can meaningfully support daily functioning. Whether a PSD is right for a particular person with schizophrenia or a related condition is an individual clinical question, not something a website can answer.
How much does a psychiatric service dog cost?
The dominant cost is training, which varies enormously depending on whether you owner-train or use a programme. Documentation is a small fraction of it. Be wary of anyone bundling a "PSD" as a product you can buy outright.
Can a landlord refuse a psychiatric service dog?
