Does Aurora require a license for an emotional support dog?
Yes, once the dog is over six months old. Aurora requires dogs and cats over six months to be licensed through the Aurora Animal Shelter with a current rabies vaccination. Colorado exempts service animal owners from local licensing fees, but that exemption names service animals, not emotional support animals.
Can an Aurora landlord refuse an emotional support animal?
Not simply because of a no-pets rule. HB26-1045, in force since August 12, 2026, brings emotional support animals under Colorado's assistance animal housing rules and presumes a total ban on them discriminatory. When neither the disability nor the need for the animal is obvious, the landlord may ask for reasonable documentation, and the specific animal's documented conduct can still count.
Can my whole Aurora evaluation happen online?
Only with some clinicians. A physician may make the housing finding after a telemedicine visit, but Colorado requires a psychologist, counselor, social worker, marriage and family therapist, addiction counselor or nurse to meet you in person before making one.
Who takes an Aurora housing complaint about an assistance animal?
Colorado's Civil Rights Division, which accepts housing complaints for one year after the discriminatory act. HUD now finds cause under the federal Fair Housing Act only for individually trained animals, so for an emotional support animal the state route is the one that counts. Denver's anti-discrimination office covers only homes inside Denver.
Are pit bulls allowed in Aurora now?
Aurora voters repealed the city's pit bull breed ban in November 2024. A landlord's pet policy is a separate matter, and whether it applies to an assistance animal is part of the accommodation decision.
