A City Built Around a Navy Yard
Bremerton incorporated on October 15, 1901, and nearly lost its shipyard work the next year when the Navy moved repairs to California over conditions on the waterfront. The yard came back, and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard still defines the city. Across the water, Manette was its own town until Bremerton annexed it in 1918.

Bremerton Questions
Bremerton requires dogs and cats to be licensed every year, within 30 calendar days of getting the animal or moving into the city. Kitsap Humane Society handles the licensing.
Up to four household pets in any mix of dogs, cats and ferrets. Keeping more, or breeding, needs a Pet Enthusiast or Pet Hobbyist license.
Since July 1, 2026, Washington State Ferries allows pets on vehicle decks, in outdoor passenger areas and in marked cabin areas at the end opposite the galley. Pets stay out of the galley and off seats and tables; only service animals may go everywhere.
Only in a fully enclosed pet carrier, and only if the animal weighs 25 pounds or less. Emotional support animals follow the pet rule, and trained service animals are welcome.
A yearly license is $12 for an altered dog and $50 for an unaltered one, and $7 or $40 for a cat. Altered pets can also get three-year or lifetime licenses.
