Fourth Time Lucky: Lakewood Becomes a City
Voters turned down cityhood in 1971, 1990 and 1994 before approving it by a 20-point margin in 1995. Lakewood incorporated on February 28, 1996, the same day as Edgewood, and immediately became the second-largest city in Pierce County. When does a Lakewood pet license expire?
Every Lakewood license expires on December 31, whenever it was bought, and must be renewed by February 28. The city sends renewal notices in January.
Do service animals pay for a Lakewood license?
Guide and service animals are exempt from the licensing fee. All dogs and cats in the city over eight weeks old need a license.
I am stationed at JBLM. Can I end my lease early if I get orders?
The federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act lets service members end a residential lease after qualifying orders, such as a permanent change of station. For rent paid monthly, the lease ends 30 days after the next rent due date following written notice with a copy of the orders.
Can my emotional support animal ride Pierce Transit?
Trained service animals ride with their handlers. Emotional support animals are not service animals under transit rules, so plan to use a carrier as you would for a pet.
How long do I have to file a housing discrimination complaint?

What if my pet loses its license tag?
