Named for Richard F. Cooke, Chartered in 1903
When Putnam County needed a county seat in 1854, the town grew on land bought by Charles Crook, near springs that could supply it, and took the name of Richard F. Cooke. Railroad investment led to incorporation in 1903, and in 1909 the Tennessee Central built the West Side depot that carried passengers until 1955 and is now the Cookeville Depot Museum. A college founded the same year became Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in 1915 and Tennessee Technological University in 1965.
