A Plateau That Voted to Become a City
For most of its history the plateau was rural, unincorporated King County, with resorts by the 1930s and suburbs from the 1970s. A 1991 vote to join Issaquah failed, and so did a 1992 vote on becoming a city. Residents finally incorporated Sammamish on August 31, 1999. The name comes from the Lushootseed name of the Sammamish people.
