A Town First Named Slaughter
The town was platted in 1886 as Slaughter and incorporated under that name in 1891. Newer residents disliked it, especially once the hotel became the Slaughter House, and in 1893 the legislature renamed it Auburn after Auburn, New York, another hop-growing town.
