Magna ESA and Psychiatric Service Dog Letters
Magna, between the northern Oquirrh Mountains and the Great Salt Lake, takes its name from the Latin word for great, after the Magna Mill that Utah Copper began in 1906, and it became a city on May 1, 2024. Begin with the free screening, and a Utah-licensed clinician decides whether an ESA or psychiatric service dog letter fits your care.
Animals at Great Salt Lake State Park
Pleasant Green Becomes Magna
Farmers who settled at the base of the northern Oquirrhs in 1868 called their community Pleasant Green, and Abraham Coon ran a livestock ranch called Coonville at the canyon mouth near 5400 South. Copper changed everything: Utah Copper began the Magna Mill in 1906, Greek immigrants built a Greektown from 1903, and in 1914 the post office took the name Magna to end mix-ups with Pleasant Grove.

Where ESAs stop
Public places such as park buildings admit service dogs, not ESAs; the letter helps with housing.
Magna Questions on the Clapperboard
Can I bring my dog to Great Salt Lake State Park near Magna?
Yes. The park lists pets as allowed, and Utah's state park rules require a pet to be caged, held on a leash no longer than six feet, or kept inside a vehicle, with the owner picking up after it.
Can an emotional support animal go into Great Salt Lake State Park buildings?
No. Utah's park rule keeps animals out of public buildings and food service and dining areas, with an exception only for guide or service dogs, so an ESA is treated like any other pet there.
Who licenses pets in Magna?
Salt Lake County Animal Services. A pet is licensed by five months of age, or within 30 days of moving in or getting the pet, and the license is renewed every year.
Where does a stray found in Magna go?
Take it to Salt Lake County Animal Services at 511 W 3900 S, open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or call Dispatch at 801-840-4000 for a pickup.
How do I get a lost Magna pet back from the county shelter?
An adult with photo ID and proof of ownership can redeem the pet. Strays are held for five business days, so start looking right away.
What happens if a support animal in Magna bites someone?
Under Utah rule R386-702-12, a healthy dog, cat or ferret that bites a person is confined and observed for 10 days whatever its vaccination status, and an unvaccinated animal is vaccinated before release. Being an ESA does not change that.
