Tamarac Emotional Support Animal and Psychiatric Service Dog Letters
Tamarac started in the early 1960s as an active adult community of maintenance-free homes and had 71,897 residents in 2020. A free online screening comes first, and a Florida-licensed clinician then decides whether an ESA letter or a psychiatric service dog letter suits you.

Ken Behring's Bedroom Community
A young developer from the Midwest, Ken Behring, bought land in the early 1960s and built two-bedroom homes for active adults. He named the place after the nearby Tamarac Country Club in Oakland Park. Early leaders wanted it to stay a bedroom community and let Fort Lauderdale annex commercial pockets.
- 1963: Tamarac Lakes Sections One and Two, east of State Road 7, built by Behring and sold by Jesse Pilch.
- Next came homes on a former orange grove, Tamarac Lakes North.
- Later: Tamarac Lakes South, the Mainlands of Tamarac Lakes and the Woodlands.

Tamarac Questions From the Newsletter
Can I bring a community cat from Tamarac without an appointment?
Yes, through Broward County's Return-to-Field program: up to two cats per person per day in humane traps, Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drive to the Pet Help Entrance and stay in your vehicle.
Do I need an appointment for trap-neuter-return?
Yes. Since April 26, 2026, TNR at Broward County Animal Care is by appointment only, for no more than two cats per person or household. Cats are dropped at the Clinic Services Lobby and are ready at 8 a.m. the next day.
Which cats qualify for the county TNR program?
Healthy, unowned cats that weigh at least 3 pounds, each in its own humane live trap. Carriers, crates and makeshift traps are not accepted.
Will Animal Care trap the cats for me?
No. Broward County Animal Care does not trap community cats for the public, so residents or caretakers do the trapping.
Where is Broward County Animal Care?
At 2400 SW 42nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. The main number is 954-359-1313.
Can a Tamarac landlord charge a pet fee for an approved ESA?
Not under Florida Statute 760.27, which bars extra charges for an emotional support animal the provider accepts. The provider may ask for proof that the animal meets state and local licensing and vaccination rules, and you are liable for damage.
