Fort Mellon, Mellonville and the Celery City
Sanford sits on the south shore of Lake Monroe, at the head of navigation on the St. Johns River. The Army's Camp Monroe was attacked in 1837 and renamed Fort Mellon, and the town of Mellonville grew around it. In 1870 Henry Shelton Sanford bought land to the west, laid out his own town and called it the Gateway City to South Florida. After the Great Freeze ruined the citrus groves, farmers turned to vegetables, and the celery first planted in 1896 earned Sanford its nickname.

Sanford Questions from the Card Catalog
Who can adopt through Seniors for Seniors in Seminole County?
Adopters who are 60 or older can take home a senior dog or cat, one aged 6 years or more, with no adoption fee from Seminole County Animal Services.
How does a veteran adopt through Pets for Patriots at the Sanford shelter?
The veteran applies online with Pets for Patriots and supplies eligibility documents. Approval takes no more than two business days, after which the veteran visits the shelter and adopts an eligible dog or cat for free.
Which shelter animals count as eligible for Pets for Patriots?
A dog or cat at least 2 years old, one with special needs, one that has stayed in the shelter for six months or longer, or a dog that weighs 40 pounds or more at adoption.
What will reclaiming a lost pet from Seminole County Animal Services cost?
The county lists a $50 impound fee and $10 per day of boarding, plus $10 for a rabies shot when needed, $10 for a microchip and a county pet license of $5 to $25. Citations for ordinance violations can be added.
How long is a stray with no ID held at the Sanford shelter?
Five business days when the pet has no microchip or identification; after that it is evaluated for adoption. When a pet has a chip or ID, staff search for the owner, so the wait can be longer.
Is an emotional support animal protected in a Sanford rental?
Florida Statute 760.27 still governs requests to Florida housing providers, who may ask for reliable documentation of the need and proof of licensing and vaccination but not your diagnosis. Since May 2026 HUD finds reasonable cause only for animals trained to do disability-related work or tasks, so a trained psychiatric service dog has the firmer federal footing.
