From Conway Station to the City of Colleges
Conway grew around a depot. Asa P. Robinson, chief engineer of the Little Rock-Fort Smith Railroad, laid out a town around the station after the Civil War and named it Conway Station for a well-known Arkansas family. Father Joseph Strub, who had founded Duquesne University, arrived in 1878 and drew German Catholic settlers to the St. Joseph Colony; by 1889 more than 100 German families lived here. Today the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College and Central Baptist College share what the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce declared the City of Colleges.
