GAD manifests as persistent, excessive worry that is difficult to control, accompanied by physical symptoms including muscle tension, insomnia, and difficulty concentrating. Panic disorder involves recurrent unexpected attacks with significant anticipatory anxiety. Both conditions are evaluated against DSM-5 criteria for functional impairment and therapeutic benefit of animal companionship.

MDD is characterized by persistent depressed mood, markedly diminished interest or pleasure, fatigue, impaired concentration, and functional decline lasting at least two weeks. Persistent Depressive Disorder (dysthymia) presents with chronic low-grade depression over extended periods. Both are assessed for the degree of functional impairment and the therapeutic benefit that animal companionship provides.

PTSD involves intrusive re-experiencing of traumatic events, persistent avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and marked hyperarousal. Evaluations are conducted using a trauma-informed clinical approach. Military veterans, first responders, and civilian trauma survivors in the Wichita area are all eligible for evaluation.

Bipolar disorders are characterized by distinct mood episodes — manic or hypomanic episodes alternating with depressive episodes — that cause significant functional disruption. ESA documentation may be appropriate during periods of relative stability when the therapeutic benefit of animal companionship is clinically meaningful for mood regulation and daily structure.

OCD involves time-consuming obsessions and compulsions that cause marked distress and functional limitation. Related conditions including body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, and excoriation disorder fall within the OCD spectrum. Evaluations assess the clinical significance of symptoms and the therapeutic role of animal interaction in managing compulsive patterns.
