The Military Trail and Arch Creek

In 1856 Army soldiers cut an eight-foot Military Trail from Fort Lauderdale to Fort Dallas, Dade County's first road. It crossed Arch Creek on a natural limestone bridge, which no longer stands, in what is now Arch Creek Memorial Park. Charles J. Ihle settled nearby in 1891, buying land from the state at a dollar an acre near today's NE 116th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, and an Arch Creek railroad depot at 125th Street became the community's hub.

North Miami Questions on the Paddle Rack

1

Can North Miami residents use the Miami-Dade low-cost spay and neuter clinics?

Yes. The surgeries are for pet dogs and cats of Miami-Dade County residents, by appointment only, at the Animal Services clinics in Doral and Homestead.

2

How much does Miami-Dade Animal Services charge to spay or neuter a pet?

$80 for a dog and $30 for a cat, due on the morning you drop the pet off. If you cannot show a current rabies vaccination, the shot can be given that day for $25.

3

How far ahead can I book a county spay or neuter appointment?

Up to 14 days in advance, with a separate appointment for each pet. Book by calling 311 or 305-468-5900.

4

Is my puppy or kitten old enough for the county clinic?

Pets must be at least three months old and weigh more than three pounds. The clinic veterinarian can still decline surgery for health reasons.

5

What should I do the night before and the morning of surgery?

Take away food and water after 9 p.m., arrive by 7 a.m., and bring every cat in its own carrier. Pets over four months need proof of a current rabies vaccination at check-in.

6

Can I ask my North Miami landlord to allow an emotional support animal?

Yes. Florida Statute 760.27 sets the rules for that request: the landlord may ask for reliable documentation of the disability-related need and proof of licensing and vaccination, but not for a diagnosis. Be aware that HUD no longer treats waiving a pet policy for an untrained ESA as presumptively reasonable.
