Gilbert, From Rail Stop to Suburb

The town traces back to land William "Bobby" Gilbert provided to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 for its line between Phoenix and Florence. Water from the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated canals turned it into farm country, and for years it was called the hay shipping capital of the world. Ayer's Grocery Store opened in 1910 and held the first post office two years later; the town incorporated on July 6, 1920.
