The Anchorage Clinical Evaluation Path
Every evaluation follows a structured, four-stage clinical pathway designed to meet DSM-5 assessment standards — not to produce letters for everyone who applies.
Stage 1 — Structured Symptom Inventory
A validated intake questionnaire captures your current symptom presentation, functional impairment, diagnostic history, and therapeutic relationship with your animal. Estimated 10–12 minutes.
Stage 2 — Licensed Clinician Review
An Alaska-licensed mental health professional reviews your responses against DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and clinical guidelines for ESA appropriateness.
Stage 3 — Telehealth Consultation (If Indicated)
When additional clinical information is needed, a secure video consultation is scheduled — with evening and weekend slots available for Anchorage schedules.
Stage 4 — Clinical Determination
If criteria are met, documentation is issued on professional letterhead within 24–48 hours. Clinicians who determine documentation is not appropriate trigger a full refund.
Alaska-Specific Mental Health Context
Alaska presents unique mental health challenges relevant to ESA evaluations.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Anchorage averages just 5.5 hours of daylight in December. Clinically recognized SAD and subsyndromal seasonal depression are among the most common presentations evaluated in our Alaska caseload.
Isolation & Polar Night Patterns
Extended winter darkness contributes to elevated anxiety, disrupted circadian rhythms, and social withdrawal — all clinically assessed in our intake process.
Military-Related Trauma
With the highest per-capita military population of any major U.S. city, Anchorage sees elevated rates of PTSD, moral injury, and adjustment disorders among JBER-affiliated individuals.
Conditions Clinically Evaluated for ESA Eligibility
ESA documentation is therapeutically appropriate when a diagnosed mental health condition causes meaningful functional impairment and an animal provides measurable therapeutic benefit.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder & Panic
Persistent, uncontrollable worry and episodic panic that disrupt work, housing stability, and daily function — among the most common presentations in Anchorage evaluations.
Major Depressive Disorder & Seasonal Affective Disorder
Persistent low mood, anhedonia, fatigue, and cognitive slowing — particularly relevant given Alaska's extreme winter light deprivation affecting circadian rhythms.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Re-experiencing trauma, hypervigilance, avoidance, and emotional dysregulation — evaluated with a trauma-informed clinical framework throughout our process.
Bipolar I & II Disorders
Mood cycling between depressive and manic or hypomanic episodes affecting occupational function, housing stability, and interpersonal relationships.
OCD & Anxiety-Spectrum Conditions
Intrusive thoughts and ritualistic behaviors causing significant daily distress and functional impairment, assessed against DSM-5 OCD criteria.
Adjustment Disorders & Chronic Stress
Particularly relevant for JBER personnel transitioning to civilian life, or Alaskans coping with relocation, job loss, or significant life stressors.
Anchorage Neighborhoods & Service Area
Our telehealth evaluations serve residents throughout the Anchorage Bowl and the broader municipality — from Eagle River to Girdwood.
Alaska Housing Law Essentials
